Communication and understanding - what language conveys in nursing

  • Language is a central medium for human understanding and a complex form of communication. Language is also part of the day-to-day working life of nurses and consists of a combination of specialist terms and everyday language. Understanding is fundamental to enable that which is said to be classified and made sense of. The language used can help the person to find order, especially in changed life situations. Further, the time spent in communication plays an important role, especially when it is important to avoid misunderstandings. In the nursing context there are barriers to communication: both on the part of the nurse and on the part of the patient/resident. Improving communication requires not only simple speech training, but a varied range of methods for improving speech and communication. In this, non-verbal communication, which accompanies speech, can facilitate but also hinder the message. Values and attitudes can also influence communication. In nursing, it is important that the language a person uses is congruent with their attitudes, otherwise contradictions can arise. It is just as important to take enough time when conveying complex facts. Short messages can appear oversimplified and even inadequate. Similarly, speech requires pratice in order to be used to good effect. A further aspect is listening and asking questions, without which, communication can remain superficial. As long as misunderstandings are not ignored, but discussed, mutual understanding can be facilitated and communication improved.
